Danville School Area Parking Study
Conducted by Danville Heritage Association
Pat Crow and Patrick Crow
In September 2022, five sequences of aerial photographs were taken by Patrick Crow over the Danville school area. The purpose of this effort is to ascertain whether or not there is a parking congestion condition around the Danville High School and the Danville Elementary Building.
The process initiated was simple – take photographs on various days of the week over the parking areas surrounding the school. This included the streets, the school parking lots, and other areas where people park their vehicles on a daily basis in and around the Danville Schools.
The photographs taken are summarized in the attached photographic report. In addition to the September daily photographs, photographs were also taken on Saturday February 18, 2023 during a weightlifting meet hosted at the Danville schools.
The results were tabulated, and the data is reflected in the attached table (below) entitled “Parking Analysis Report”.
To facilitate the study, the parking areas were designated as follows:
1. On School Property:
a. Intermediate Lot
b. HS South Side Lot
c. HS W (High St) Side Lot
d. HS E Serilda St Side Lot
2. Street Parking:
a. HS W High Street
b. HS Serilda Street
c. HS Tilton Street (-N side)
d. HS N Rambo St (both sides)
Conclusions:
1. The total parking capacity around the school totals 175 parking spaces.
2. There are 114 spaces in School Parking Lots
3. There are 61 spaces – Street Parking
4. The average vehicles parking in school lots vs. capacity:
a. Intermediate Lot 23 vs. 49
b. HS South Side Lot 22 vs. 38
c. HS W (High St) Side Lot 7 vs. 10
d. HS E Serilda St Side Lot 6 vs. 17
e. Overall 58 vs. 114
5. If you remove the HS South Side Lot from the parking inventory, the average vehicles parking in school lots vs. capacity equals 58 vehicles in 76 spaces.
6. At no time during the school hour parking period did the number of vehicles parked exceed the parking available WITHOUT the HS South Side Lot.
