Proposed Senior Activity Center
PREFACE: The proposed Senior Activity Center will be located in room #6 on the upper floor of the school building, near the Public Library and the Technology/Instruction Classroom. The center will provide a dedicated space where older adults in our community can gather for social connection with peers. The goal is to offer a range of activities and programs on a daily basis, most free or for a small fee.
FREDERICKTOWN REPORT: A similar program for Seniors in Fredericktown is located in a school building owned by and shared with the Fredericktown School District. There is cooperation in significant aspects, notably sharing gymnasium space outside the school schedule for senior fitness programs. The main bathroom is also shared by students and seniors using the gym per agreement with the District. The center has been operating since 2016. There is no membership fee. They do not solicit donations and rely entirely on Senior Levy money. (See full Fredericktown Senior Activity Center Report at bottom of this page.

Fredericktown Senior Activity Center Report
By Linda Heaton - 5/24/2023
I visited the Fredericktown Senior Activity Center on Wednesday, 5/24/23. Cynthia, Assistant to Director Cindy Ault , gave me a tour of the facility and review of operations. She started with the importance of documentation of attendance and activities, for report to the School District and documentation for use of Senior Levy money. Sign in book is first stop for anyone coming to utilize any aspect of program. The Center has been operating since 2016. There are seven Board members. There is no membership fee, They do not solicit donations. They rely entirely on Senior Levy money.
A copy of the schedule for three days of operation weekly for the month of May is attached. They have a small kitchen and provide lunch all three days. Laurels provides one lunch per month, very well attended. In addition the center provides a major Christmas luncheon, also well attended. Lunch is provided in the kitchen/dining room, which converts to cards and games in the afternoon.
The second room, or “gathering room” as Cynthia calls it ,is used for book club, puzzles, exercise with Wii programs. It also is used for cards after lunch, as needed.
The center also provides monthly excursions - Guardian games, theater performances, visits
to parks, etc. Possibilities for combining with our future program in these activities will be explored.
As noted on the schedule, there is cooperation with the School District in significant aspects. There is a gymnasium still utilized by the School District in this building. The senior program no longer has access to KCH gym hours as listed on the schedule. The GYM walking hours listed at the top of the schedule are hours outside the school schedule which District allows seniors walking in the gym. The main bathroom is shared by students using the gym and seniors per agreement with the District.
